Hey everybun~ Since we’ve been having fun dropping facts about Japan, let’s tackle another topic! We’re going to be talking about Golden Week~ What is Golden Week you ask? Well it’s a whole week’s worth of holidays from April 29 – May 6. The holidays include Showa Day, Constitution Day, Greenery Day, and Children’s Day. A few of those days don’t necessarily have any holidays, but since there’s holidays back to back, Japan just decided to make it a whole week of vacation time! Let’s break down what each holiday is. Showa Day is the birthday of former Emperor Showa.
Constitution Day is when the new postwar constitution was put into effect back in 1947. Greenery Day is dedicated to the environment due to the fact that former Emperor Showa loved plants and nature(originally this day was celebrated on the day of his bday!) And finally, Children’s day families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls, symbolizing strength, power and success in life. Trains, airports, and sight seeing spots get super crowded during this week because EVERYONE is taking advantage of this whole week vacation.
It’s honestly best to avoid this week if you want to visit Japan because GOOD LUCK GETTING ANYWHERE AND NOT GETTING ANXIETY FROM THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE OUT AND ABOUT. Anyway, it’s such an interesting concept because since travel from the locals are high, so are the sales! People love to go shopping during this time of the year and it allows them to relax and not think about work for once(Well deserved rest for all the hardworking people out there!)
