July Edition

Issue #7

Hey everybun!!! Happy July!!! I hope everyone has had a great month so far with it just being the 4th of July and the booming of many conventions throughout the country! We wanted to stick with a summer/apple theme for the cover letter this month because we cannot emphasize how amazing apples are. A few buns can argue and say: “well, they’re just apples…what makes them so special?”

I don’t think many buns realize that apples are so versatile as desserts, drinks, appetizers, you name it! We can go from making an apple crumble to green salads that have dices apples in them to apple ciders! Apples are also suuuper refreshing to eat and an easy snack to digest when we’re feeling something a little sweet or evern tart. Even though most apples peak during the fall, there are summer apples that ripen from late July-August that we should keep an eye out for. Summer apples are usually more tart, crisp, and highly refreshing.

However, because of their lower sugar content, they don’t store well in room temperature so it’s best to eat them fresh or use them in baking recipes the minute they are picked. A few examples of summer apples are lodi, zestar, and discovery apples. Have any of our dedicated readers gone apple picking before? We HIGHLY recommend finding an orchard that’s open to the public and allows apple picking. Even though apples are easily accessible in store, picking apples feel so rewarding and is just an overall fun activity to do with friends and family! And it also gives a little more incite about where our apples come from! I hope this little segment about apples was interesting and maybe might open up some eyes to seek out and try different kinds yourselves!!

Butter’s Toffee Apple Sponge Pudding

Hi my lil buns! Your fav bunbun Butter is here with another recipe! It’s been VERY hot out these days so I hope everyone is staying hydrated and cool! I was thinking of what new recipe to share with you guys and, as much as I hate to say it, I got inspired by Tomaki’s apple mojito. Apples are all the buns’ favorite fruit whether they’re just for a snack, drink, or dessert! I decided to try out a new recipe today that I hope you’ll all like! It’s a toffee apple sponge pudding! It’s not the kind of pudding you guys are used to though. I’ll teach you guys how to make it :3 What you’re going to need for this recipe is butter, sugar, eggs, flour, milk, chopped and cored apples, and sugar for the sponge cake portion. For the sauce that we’re going to be pouring over the cake will use butter, brown sugar, cream, condensed milk, and ready made custard(just to save ourselves a little bit of time~) First, preheat the oven at 350F and while that’s going, beat the butter and sugar together until it’s all pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, but one at a time to fully incorporate them into the mixture!

Now you want to set this aside for a bit because we’re going to work on the apples. Place the chopped apples into a pan with sugar and cook it for about 5 minutes or until the sugar has dissolved and the apples has softened. Next we want to start on the sauce by combining everything into a another pan and stirring it constantly until it thickens and then we set it aside to cool.

I forgot to mention that we’re going to going to need dariole molds for our cakes. With that being said, we’re going to spoon a little bit of the sauce we set aside into eight mols and divide the cooked apples from earlier equally among the molds. Once that is done, we’re spooning our sponecake mixture into them and putting our molds into a large roasting tray and pouring enough water until it reaches the sides of the dariole molds about half way up. Cover it with some foil and let it cook for 25 min or until golden brown.

And FINALLY(sorry this is such a long recipe >.<) once everything is cool, flip the sponge puddings onto serving plates and drizzle that custard over them. And we are DONE! This recipe took a bit of time to perfect and craft because I kept overcooking my cakes and they didn’t get the right texture on my first tries, but I believe in you guys to do better than I did! I hope you like these cakes as much as we do :3

Kumi’s Yokai Class

Hello every bun. Welcome to my new column, Kumi’s Yokai class. I realized that some of you speak of these “Yokais” as if they were myth, but let me tell you, they are definitely real! Everyone thinks tanukis are cute and adorable, but they’re the worst!! The most wretched annoying things. Anyways, I’m here to set thing straight. I will demystify these creatures for you.
Let’s start off with one of the more popular ones, kitsune. (even though it should be me!!! ugh)

They are smarty pants foxes that can shapeshift into humans. For every 100 years they live, they get a new tail. So those nine tailed foxes you hear about are pretty legendary.

That means they’ve been alive for almost a thousand years. I am not quite that old or haggard myself, but I won’t be revealing my age any time soon.

There are mainly two types of kitsune: Zenko, the respectable ones that actually contribute something to society. They help shrines ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. How? I don’t know. I’ve never talked to one personally, only seeing them in passing while at a Yokai gathering. The other type of Kitsune are the ones that cause trouble. I heard about this infamous Kitsune that went around seducing men and stealing their souls. Those men probably deserved it though.

To keep it short- that’s about it. I see them everywhere in modern media nowadays. There’s even a game character based off one!!! What does a yokai like me have to do to get put in a game huh? Do I need to go sit in front of a shrine and bless it or something?!

Tomaki’s Iced Green Apple Mojito

Hey there everybun! It’s your boy Tomaki here! It’s getting super hot these days and I was thinking what kind of drink to make on a hot summer’s day? I know I’ve been giving you guys mocktail recipes these past few months, but I’ve really been trying to lock in on my mixologist skills! I have a suuuper simple one for you buns, so don’t freak out! I’ll teach you how to make an iced green apple mojito. All you’re going to need is some green apple syrup, mint, lime juice, ice(obvi!), and club soda or sparkling water. To make my life easier, I just buy apple syrup by the bottle.

You can make your own homemade syrup at home by dicing some granny smith apples and simmering them in a pot with honey and water. Grab a nice tall glass and drop a few mint leaves in there. For this step, you’re going to need a muddler and you’re going add mint with lemon juice and muddle them together. Pour in your syrup and throw some ice into that glass. Lastly, add club soda or sparkling water to it, stir it well, and add a few thin slices of granny smith apples and a mint lfea to make it look all fancy shmancy!

This is probably one of my most refreshing drinks I’ve ever made because it’s sweet while also being a bit tart to give you that kick. The mint really brings out the freshness and cooling sensation to the drink, which I think is absolutely perfect for summer time. I think I’m going to pack these ingredients into a cooler and make them for our next outing at the beach. It’s surely going to keep everyone going even on a hot day!

Fall Down the Rabbit Hole with Pongo

Hello there everybun. Pongo here. I’m sure a few of the buns have told you, but we’ve all been very obsessed with apple desserts, drinks, and such this month. With that being said, I wanted make my segment about apples. Did you know that there’s around 20 variations of apples in the world? Who would have thought apples could come in so much variety? I won’t talk about all the apples because that would just go on forever. I want to at least talk about 3 different types which are envy apples, opal apples, and ambrosia apples. Let’s start off by talking about the health benefits of apples. You know what they say: an apple a day keeps the doctor away (Tomaki always reminds me of this, but I think he should be reminding Purin instead…) Not only apples are a good treat, but they are definitely a good source of fiber, vitamin c, and their filling due to their water and fiber content.

Keeping the skin on gives you more benefits because that’s where the fiber lies. Envy apples are premium apples known for their intense sweetness, dense crunch, and fragrant flavor. They were originally bred from New Zealand and is said to be a cross over between a gala and braeburn apples. Purin tells me this is his favorite apple because of how sweet it is(Butter has to hold him back whenever they’re in the stores tho because of how expensive they can get though). Opal apples are the least likely to turn brown because they were bred to resist oxidation. They’re bright yellow with a crunchy texture and are really good for salads since they don’t brown so quickly.

And lastly, ambrosia apples are my personal favorite. They taste very similarly to pears and due to their low acidity content, they’re really good for sensitive stomachs. Sometimes I get really bad tummy issues, but ambrosia apples really help if I’m craving something sweet. Anyway, I hope I can do more of these segments in the future. It’s really fun learning and also educating you readers about things I discover for the newsletter. Until next time.

Purin’s Game Review: RDR2

Yeehaw buns! I hope you got to play lots of games this summer! I know its been a while since the last game review but that’s because I’ve been sucked into the massive world of Red Dead Redemption 2. I’ve never thought of myself as a Western enjoyer but this was one insane ride. I enjoy both open world and role playing games so this was definitely something up my alley, but the setting, narratives, and characters were really a nice new flavor I haven’t quite experienced in other games. This game is definitely a slow burn, since it’s designed to be very immersive and realistic, where every action takes time to preform and characters gradually but subtly change from their every adventure. The amount of depth in the game is mind boggling, there are so many moments and experiences that you can just miss if you didn’t play close attention.

Even though the game takes its time to play out, it’s not short of variety. Being a game set in the (kinda~) wild west, train robberies and bounty hunting are expected, but on top of that, there are legendary animals to track down and hunt, outfits and weapons to collect, and run-ins with strangers that’ll put your humanity to test. Even the diversity in the environment was a surprise, I was not expecting snowy mountains and swampy forests in my cowboy game.

The story of the game also took me for a wild ride. There are moments that are funny and lighthearted, but there are also times that are sad and hopeless. Sometimes, I’m filled with awe and wonder, but also at fury. There are also times where it goes from awe to vengeance into badassery! The characters are all incredibly well written too. Arthur is such a charming and funny character while being a butthole at the same time lol. Even the supporting cast are all really well written with their own character growth moments that make them feel all the more believable.

Monthly Faves!

Butter’s Picnic Basket

Since it’s summer, Butter invested in a new picnic basket for when the bun gang want to go out for a nice time at the park or at the beach. The one she chose has a really good compartment for plates, cups, and utensils making it easy to pack everything all in one go. She loves keeping things organized and making sure nothing gets lost before going home.

Kumi’s Magsafe Phone Grip

Kumi has been super obsessed with her new magsafe phone grip. It really helps her especially when she wants to watch videos on her phone while she’s eating, lying on the floor, and doing her make up! On top of that, if she ever needs to charge her phone, she can easily snap it off to charge her phone real fast~

If you want to match with her, make sure to check out the shop!

Purin’s Portable Charger

Like a real gamer, Purin recently bought a portable charger. We’re not talking about those really small portable chargers, the one Purin bought is a pretty hefty one so he can bring his handheld gaming devices with him. He always gets scolded for not touching enough grass, so why not bring his handhelds with him while outside AND also not have to worry about them dying. It truly is having the best of both worlds.
